Construção Simbólica (Panteão)

Caves coincides with my relocation to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In this sense, the series evokes themes of adaptation, o adjusting into new realities and life circumstances. To adapt: myself, my family, my kids. This was a moment conducive to profound reflections, a necessary introspection time to reorganize, reorientate, restart. The recurring image of a cave once again brought contemplation on shelter as a place of refuge, of recharge. Time to nurture and heal the wounds; time to gestate new projects. Relocating was a visceral moment given the extent and intensity of changes to undergo. It challenges your emotional structures, your belief system and provokes your ability to absorb and process a foreign culture.

Observation, embodiment, connection.

Correlation.

The native peoples of Malaysia are also guardians of the land, of the waters, of the forest. They personify the forces of nature and its cycles of creation and destruction. I’ve been seeking to correlate their practices to those of Umbanda, a belief system brought by the Africans to Brazil over colonial times, rooted in Yoruba mythology. How do such distinct cultures correlate give their crafts and ritual practices? Immersing myself in new land gave way to new installation pieces in which I’m proposing new symbols that represent the confluence of diverse ancient wisdoms and cosmologies.
